A solution to the dreaded popout when catching the puck, a bob and float takes a floating T skate lace pocket to the next level.
The floating T pocket is a very popular goalie mod, and a great way to improve performance of your glove by reducing popouts of the puck hitting the the middle or base of the T and popping back out of the basket before you are able to close the mitt (a trend I notice with younger goalies or tendys with a glove not quite broken in entirely). The float adds lace at the base of the T, providing a softer 'landing' for the puck and absorbs the pucks energy better than a tightly bound T base. Plus, skate lace looks dang sharp!
The bob & float, named after the 'bobbing' or shortening of the T itself, is a physical modification of T to reduce it's proverbial tail. Doing so gives the ability to make more lace loops exposed to the pocket itself and helps to absorb the puck better with the larger surface area of lace and less of the stiff material of the T spine.
As a note, this is not a reversible modification and would require a new T to go back to a stock pocket. Some goalies have mentioned they feel the puck less hitting the T, which would track as this mod removes the piece of the T that transfers the energy of the puck through the rest of the glove. Having made the plunge long ago on all of my personal gloves, I believe goalies of all levels can benefit from the extra give of a floating T or bob and float- I wouldn't ever go back to a normal pocket!
And I've gotta give credit where credit is due for my knowledge of this modification. I learned of this mod from Factory MAD, where Dennis has been pumping out top-tier equipment and the cream-of-the-crop for a glove with a bobbed T from factory for many years.
